One Life - Part 15

Derick's mother left the house one morning to buy some groceries. Derick who had grown sick of playing with his niece, was looking for something more exciting to do. He looked out of the kitchen's window and much to his delight, he saw what he had been yearning for. Looking down at the laundry of the flat below his, he saw 2 pairs of bras dangling from the bamboo pole. The sight of them aroused him so much that he decided that he must lay his hands on them by hook or by crook. Just then, Lena came out of her 'hideout', unlocked the main door and left the house, still murmuring to herself. Though, Derick had been told to keep an eye on her, he was too distracted to go after her.

He used an extended pole holder to reach for the bras and to hook them out of the bamboo pole. As the bras were fastened at the end of the pole, Derick climbed onto a chair so as to stretch further out. He did manage to hook onto one of the bras and just as he tried to pull it upward, the chair he was standing on, slided backward and Derick, who was leaning forward, was thrown off balance. He fell through the 3rd floor window and landed head first on the grass patch below. Just as passers-by gathered around Derick who was unconscious but with no visible injuries, another loud thud was heard coming from the front of the block. Somebody had leapt from the highest floor.

Derick's mother who was returning from her marketing, saw the crowd near her block. As she approached them, a neighbour ran up to her to tell her that her son had jumped out of the kitchen's window. But before she could absorb the shock, another neighbour said that it was her daughter who had fallen. Not knowing whose words to believe, she dropped her bags of purchases and pushed her way through the crowd. When she saw Derick lying motionlessly on the grass, she called out to him in such a loud scream that it could be heard for miles. Then she ran towards the next 'gathering' and couldn't believe her eyes. Lena was lying in a pool of blood. The double blows were just too much for her and she collapsed.

By the time she came to, she was already lying in a hospital bed. Trina was at her bed with Bert. The first thing she asked for was for Derick and Lena. Trina hesitated. She couldn't bear to tell her that both of them didn't survive the fall but when she became hysterical and started to create a scene, Trina told her the truth. As soon as she heard what Trina said, she began to calm down. She claimed that Trina was lying and that both of them would be visiting her very soon. Just then she got up to chase them out of the room, saying that she needed to get herself ready for Derick's and Lena's arrival. Not wanting to agitate her further, Trina decided to leave.

Trina's mother was eventually admitted into a asylum. Derick's father who had been on an overseas business trip when the tragedies happened, decided to leave the country for good. Trina who had been Bernie's acting mother, eventually became her step-mother when Bert proposed to her. Trina also took in Lena's daughter whom she had cared for since infancy. Though her mother had never treated her well, Trina would try to pay her a visit as often as she could and even hoped that she would recover enough to be discharged and to stay with her and her 'new' family.

Unlike cats, we only have one life and yet most of the time we take our one and only life for granted. We tend to envy the life others are leading and fail to realise that our own life is actually not that bad either. Thus rather than lamenting what others have that we don't, be contented with we have and life won't be as miserable as we thought it was. I have always believed in living life to its fullest as we only have One Life. Do you?
